For most of human history, a credential meant something very specific.
It meant that someone had gone through something difficult — and had been changed by it.
The degree did not prove what you knew. It proved what you had survived. It proved that your mind had been shaped by sustained contact with complexity, failure, and constraint — and that something structural had been built as a result. The medical degree proved that your clinical reasoning had been formed through genuine encounter with cases that resisted pattern-matching. There were always practitioners who obtained credentials without fully developing the capabilities those credentials were supposed to certify. There were always ways to pass the requirements without building the deep structural formation that genuine expertise required.
But the correlation held. Credential plus performance — in that specific order, requiring that specific cognitive work — was reliable enough to sustain millennia of institutional architecture built on top of it.
A credential was never a record of performance. It was a record of formation.
That correlation has broken. What your credential proves now is something categorically different from what it was designed to prove. And the most consequential aspect of this change is not the change itself — it is that nothing in the institutional landscape has registered that the change occurred.
What Credentials Were Actually Measuring
To understand what credentials prove now, it is necessary to understand precisely what they were measuring before — because the common account of this is wrong in a specific way that matters.
Credentials were not measuring knowledge. Knowledge — the accumulation of correct information about a domain — is relatively easy to acquire and relatively easy to test. Credentials could have been purely knowledge-based, but the most consequential ones never were.

The credential survived. The formation it certified was real. For most of human history, these two things were inseparable.

AI did not make credentials easier to obtain. It made them easier to simulate.

The System-Level Consequence

The credential still certifies something. The institutions issuing it still believe it certifies the same thing it always certified. The danger is not that people know less. The danger is that we can no longer tell who knows anything at all.
The credential survived the change. The meaning behind it did not survive unchanged. And the gap between what credentials claim to certify and what they now actually certify will not close by itself — because nothing in the system that issues, awards, and relies upon credentials has the visibility to detect it.
If understanding is what survives without assistance, then a credential that cannot survive that condition certifies nothing that matters.
